Lim Village of Bac Ninh province is not far from Hanoi. It is considered as the hometown of Quan Ho folk songs, an intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. Lim festival, which is taken place annually from February 21 to February 22, has attracted thousands of residents as well as visitors all over the country to attend.

At first, Lim festival aimed to worship Ba Mu. She is a daughter of Noi Due hamlet and a person sacrificed her life to become a Buddhist nun at Lim Pagoda. After getting enlightenment, she protected the residents of Lim villages from droughts. Thanks to her contribution, the residents glorified her as their guardian and chose the day she enlightened for Lim festival. Since then, Lim festival has developing rapidly and become more and more important in promoting Quan Ho folk songs.

The festival includes the procession began from Dinh Ca Village’s Communal House to Lo Bao Village and stopped at the tomb area of Duke Nguyen Dinh Dien on Lim Hill to make incense offerings.

Whenever saying about Lim festival, listeners will immediately think about the sweet melodies of Quan ho in the area of Kinh Bac. This is one of the most special traditional art form which is interested in most today. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the skillful and impressive performances between “lien anh” and “lien chi” , which requires the quick response and deep understanding on traditional tunes. Some famous folksongs such as Moi trau, Vao chua, Gia ban or Ngoi tua man thuyen are performed by mature participants. The men and women dress traditional clothing. Women put on four panel traditional dress while men wear five panel tunic and have an umbrella on his hand.

Especially, the performances can take place in the yards, communal houses and pagodas, on boats or the side of the river.
